The Fishermen’s Mission Talk

A talk by Kate MacArthur, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Area Manager. She will talk about the history of The Fishermen’s Mission and the work they do today offering practical, financial and emotional support and providing a 24/7 emergency service to assist with accidents or illness at sea.
In October 1881 in Eyemouth 189 fishermen died close to the shore watched by their wives and children and Ebenezer Mather from the local Thames Church mission. In November Ebenezer decides to set up the National Mission to Deep Sea Fisherman to provide a ministry to fishermen and help improve their health.
By 1887 the Mission owned 6 vessels with 60 employees and by 1911 the ships had developed standing as one of the most interesting vessels afloat. Considered a cruising hospital, tobacco shop, clothing store, free library, club room, hotel and recreation ground.
Now the Mission offers a dedicated lifeline to fishermen and their families.
Come and hear more of the work of the Mission and how valuable they are to the fishing community.
